Heaven and Earth Magic w/ Jocelyn Romo

Los Angeles, 20.11.24

A very special episode of Heaven and Earth Magic, featuring the sounds of Latin American protest and resistance that shaped my upbringing—music that holds deep meaning for both my mother (who left Uruguay during the dictatorship to come to the US) and has come to hold great meaning for me as well.

As the predominant folk music movement in Latin America during the 60s and 70s, Nueva Canción artists spoke out against issues like social injustice, fascism, and inequality, even in the face of persecution. Its powerful messages of resistance and solidarity have resonated with me more than ever lately, as the ongoing struggles for democracy and human rights continue to shape the world around us.
